A ZO-Live Team Excursion

With origins deeply rooted in culture, The Pan-African Film Festival (PAFF) began in 1985 in West Africa in the capital of Burkina Faso. In 1992 famed actors Danny Glover, Ja’net Dubois and executive director Ayuko Babu organized the first official festival in Los Angeles with Whoopi Goldberg as its premiere co-host. Founded with a mission to promote cultural understanding among peoples of African descent through exhibiting art and film, the first festival featured over 40 films by black directors from four continents.

Pan-Africanism is a worldwide movement that aims to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous and diaspora ethnic groups of African descent. Amidst the many lush kingdoms that span our globe there are endless amounts of talent and history to be discovered and revered. Since its initiation PAFF is the most distinguished celebration of Pan-African cultures, and is the critically acclaimed “biggest Black film and arts festival and Black History Month Activation in the United States”. In addition to showcasing new, high-quality, and rare Black films from all over the world, there are enriching panels and workshops and unique Q & A’s from select filmmakers. Entertainment and edification are synced with the most skilled craftsmanship of art, jewelry, clothing, and artifacts to bring about a vibrant and immersive cultural experience.

ZO’s live team was honored to be drenched in all the verve. This year marked the 30th year for PAFF and was hosted at The Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Mall and Theater in Los Angeles, California. The festival did not shy away from making its presence known and boldly permeated the shopping center in its entirety. Reserving a wing of the theater for its abundance of films, hosting workshops on every veranda, and ruling the stores with an extravagant selection of vendors. It was as if PAFF was the mall itself (if PAFF could have a resident market at the mall every week that is something I’d like to get behind!).

Arriving at the beginning of the day, one of the first films up for screening was a political love story set in 1950’s Zanzibar called Tug Of War (Vuta N’Kuvute) 2022 based on a novel by Adam Shafi. The story takes place in colonial-era Zanzibar and follows forbidden lovers Denge, and Yasmin, a Mswahili revolutionary and runaway Indian-Zanzibari bride. A story of transformation, resilience, and passion is portrayed with vibrant colors and intriguing angles while delving into what life was like for Zanzbiaris during British Colonial rule – a part of history unknown to many. The film is subtitled in English as the characters speak mainly in Swahili and some Swedish. Tug Of War is a tale of love during a time of strife highlighting the beauty of human nature when faced with impossible decisions. I’m an avid lover of world music and this film includes a few bewitching traditional songs sung by a supporting character. It helped remind me of the strength of humanity, and who isn’t swooned by a good love story?

Our next adventure was exploring the art fest located inside the mall. Immediately you’re met with ornate paintings of every color and size, each artist’s booth is filled to the brim with provocative works that demand your heart to soften, and your mind to wander.

Artists from multiple continents along with locally loved veterans grace every space with sculptures, carvings, wall-murals, and collages — all delicately detailing stories of the rich history that lives on in the artist’s veins. After much time spent open-mouthed, and wide-eyed, appreciating such talented works we headed upstairs to check out the clothing/jewelry section. This is where my fancy lies. I am not new to African fashions by any means, but the power contained in every piece was saturated with intensity. Dashikis, Kabas (a long wrap-around skirt and matching blouse with ties at the waist), dresses, and regalia of all kinds! Every piece of jewelry was elaborate, majestic, and fit for royalty! All in all, our time was well spent making connections and stimulating our senses. The importance of carrying on these traditions will continue to be displayed with elegance in PAFF’s hands.

“Afro-centricity is an intellectual paradigm that privileges the centricity of Africans within the context of their own historical experiences.” – Molefi Asante.

Throughout the epic of all the events that have spanned from the beginning of life, people have toiled. When the rest of the world seems to be against you, reaching inside yourself and connecting to your roots helps empower your being so that nothing and no one can bring you down. Even in the face of war and destruction, promoting peace through the arts is the strongest weapon of all. We at ZO are proud to be a part of this celebration and look forward to many more PAFF events to come. We appreciate PAFF’s efforts and are grateful to have been enlightened.

Unfortunately Steven took a well, unfortunate chapter in his life and spun it around. We talked about how music aided him therapeutically, mental health awareness, and just who may play the lead in ‘Groovy Avocado Disco’ if the concept album ever made it to Broadway. All of that and then some in this eye-opening back and forth exchange.

Kendra: ‘Groovy Avocado Disco’ is this elaborate concept album based around therapy and a therapy session. So did you plan to drop it in May, which so happens to be Mental Health Awareness Month, or was that all coincidental?

Unfortunately Steven: The universe lined that up naturally. I had a mental breakdown in the spring of 2016 that put me on this unfortunate journey. I was writing songs therapeutically and not leaving my house. I was losing my hair and hearing voices. You know, the normal stuff. I decided to lean into the trauma and anxiety and what resulted were uncomfortably dark and funny songs. I started recording the album in April 2019 with the goal to release it in May 2020. Covid happened. I retreated. Eventually, when I got back to the songs, the timing was perfect.

Kendra: You pulled from a very personal place here in order to not only create a record but to encourage others to head to therapy. Do you feel therapy should be a regular thing for everyone just like a dentist or a family doctor?

Unfortunately Steven: Absolutely. This can’t be stressed enough. Going to therapy doesn’t equate to being crazy. Not going to therapy, to me, is crazy. There’s no shame in talking to someone about your problems. Some problems are mild and some can be heavy burdens you never knew you were carrying. I fall in the “trauma lasagna” category. Just layer upon layer of saucy goodness. It really doesn’t matter if you came from a loving family or had a privileged life. We all have dark moments. We need checkups for our brains. One could argue, more so than a doctor or dentist.

Kendra: Now ‘Groovy Avocado Disco’ again, is long. Almost two dozen tracks of indie rock meets musical theater. Did you grow up with a theater background?

Unfortunately Steven: An entrance, 11 song tracks, 7 real therapy snippets, and an exit. It wasn’t an intentional choice to have a theater element, it just naturally felt that way. I needed those therapy sessions to connect the songs and really tell a story. The album is just one conversation.

I was in drama all through high school. I didn’t partake in musical theater but was always a fan of the storytelling and how there’s a clear start, middle, and end. Jonathon Larson was a huge inspiration. I don’t have his talent but I have depression. I would listen to musicals and see them at the Pantages when I could. ‘The Book of Mormon’ may have been a game-changer of creative possibilities. Unfortunately, I can’t write a full musical. I could barely write an album.

Kendra: If they just so happened to take this to Broadway, who would you want to be the protagonist? Perhaps Tom Hanks since there is a song named after him?

Unfortunately Steven: Perhaps off, off, off-broadway. That’s something hard to imagine. I know if it were to happen, it couldn’t take itself too seriously. It would have to take place in a therapy session that psychedelically expands to the corners of the client’s mind.

Unfortunately, I’m the protagonist and my brain is the antagonist. There are very serious dark themes but they are expressed in a self-deprecating comedic way. It’s a man losing his mind and not having any answers. He doesn’t want to live anymore but he doesn’t want to die. It’s that sweet awkwardness in between. There was a moment in time when I was obsessed with Andy Kaufman. His audience would be so confused and wouldn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or storm the stage. I love that form of art.

Kendra: So I think many are going to see “Life’s Too Expensive For Me” and instantly have to listen because um, same. From a therapy standpoint do you think enough effort has been made to make it affordable?

Unfortunately Steven: Not at all. I’m a strong advocate for universal healthcare and opposed to for-profit health institutions. I believe therapy should be easily accessible and available to everyone who needs it. There are a lot of people who want to take that next step but it’s too much of a financial burden. It shouldn’t be too expensive to live with basic human needs. Mental health issues are now more common in a post covid world. We all carry things that need releasing. Without a doubt, it saved my life and helped me ground myself into who I really am. It’s unfortunate the world caught up to the songs but I assure you, it can get better.

Kendra: Now you’ve noted, “As a society, we tend to shy away from dark thoughts or depressed feelings but they are simply a part of the human condition,’ but I think in terms of music – that’s been the underlying theme of so many records that have come through my email. Do you think the more the creative arts embrace mental health, the more it’ll be normalized in everyday life?

Unfortunately Steven: It’s always been a part of rock and roll at its core. It took someone feeling depressed to pick up an instrument and sort through their life. It’s all about being an outsider to society and figuring out whatever it is that makes you tick. To see it become so straightforward and more honest in 2022 gives my soul so much hope.

Billie Eilish and the grand messiah Bo Burnham kicked that door open for this album to be accepted. They did something so raw and groundbreaking. ‘INSIDE’ blew my mind and touched me in such a way that I felt seen for the first time. I’m hopeful I can supply that for just one person.

Kendra: Time for a side note…since April showers bring May flowers, I’d love to know what song makes you bloom with happiness and why?

Unfortunately Steven: That’s a tough one. In my current state, I would have to say “My Little Red Book” by LOVE. It’s an underestimated weird bop of a song that came out in 1966. LOVE was a legendary Los Angeles band. They were also the first interracial group in rock and roll. I recently learned that my third cousin, Don Conka, was the original drummer for the band but couldn’t get his drug addiction under control to show up for the gig. It’s very ahead of its time and makes me oh so happy.

Kendra: Lastly, with ‘Groovy Avocado Disco’ out on May 6th, what else can you let us in on? Are you touring this year?

Unfortunately Steven: I want to do a music video for “People are Stupid” next. The first single was a way to ease people in without slapping them in the face with harsh reality. For my second single, the gloves will be coming off. Touring is currently on the back burner but for sure a goal. Realistically, I’d like to do a west coast tour in the fall from Los Angeles to Vancouver. Just to test the waters. This is an album that will need to be performed front to back in its entirety. To be honest, I don’t know if I’m quite ready or able to perform them live. These are real dark moments in my life and I’m hopeful I can revisit them without breaking down again. I’m grateful to make it to the other side but it’s still a daily struggle. Time will tell.

Redefining Outcomes: Marking History with a Frameless View

By Tricia Stewart Shiu

Redefining Outcomes: Marking History with a Frameless View — Read by Tricia Stewart Shiu

The Law of Attraction is a vastly popular way to frame one’s life. Movies, like “The Secret” (2006) and “Discover the Gift” (2010), have contributed to a burgeoning crop of followers over the past 10 to 15 years. Despite the medium used to deliver the message, it is clear that these movies were not merely for entertainment purposes only and a multitude of people have been more than ready to shift into this new life-affirming mindset. However, “new” is a relative term when it comes to making history or, rather, marking history.

ARTISTIC ALLEGORY | LE MOT JUSTE

The exact origins of the “Law of Attraction” (LOA) are varied. Some accounts set 1877 as the date the term was first used in print, by Russian occultist Helena Blavatsky, but others say it was in 1906 that author and publisher William Walker Atkinson wrote about it in his book, “Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World.”

No matter how you slice it, the term is definitely not new. Although, calling something “new” can most certainly shift its meaning and, in some cases, its outcome and profitability.

LOA dovetails perfectly with the gig economy—freelancers or project-based jobs (up 15% over the past 10 years), as well as, multi-level marketing companies (MLMs).

In order to make LOA work, Anirban Kar suggests, in his article “Here’s Why the “Law of Attraction” Gurus Are So Rich & You Are Not!,” that we “forget their teachings” and “focus on their business model.”

Of course, there are a myriad of other ways of framing life, however, the allure of manifesting, using “the universe” as a cosmic cash machine/genie lamp, offers some distance from the disillusionment caused by the crumbling bootstrap theory. Those who witnessed loved ones who invested their lives and livelihoods in companies who, then, pulled the plug on pensions and left many workers to fend for themselves, are looking for a little hope, if not salvation.

However, these methodologies and mindsets are completely harmless, in and of themselves. What’s the harm in wishing and hoping and moreover, if those wishes and hopes are positively focused, what could possibly be wrong with framing one’s life like this? Absolutely nothing.

But…

With each one of these methodologies, there’s a recipe or a laundry list of “to-do” items, before which, the manifestations can be manifested. It’s a slippery slope to an abysmal rabbit hole if one is not fastidiously careful.

Trouble is, framing one’s life like this appears utterly harmless and an exercise in free will. However, and there’s a big H in that word, when large groups of people begin to impress their judgments based on these frames, they become toxic and potentially abusive.

After an intensely challenging year of practicing LOA, Anirban Kar felt depleted and dejected and sought answers from LOA gurus who, essentially, said: “It was all on me. According to them, it had to be one of these things:

  1. I did not believe hard enough.
  2. I tried so hard, it created a resistance.

Again, absolutely nothing wrong with putting your dreams and hopes into action to manifest a positive outcome. Trouble comes, when the aforementioned manifestation doesn’t immediately show up. Doubt enters in the form of questioning oneself and perhaps even the methodology. Again, doubt is not a problem either, but the mindset around moving through the doubt can create a frame that is looping, treacherous and toxic.

For example, a goal is set, a wish is desired and through one of these chosen methodologies, a list of actions is created. Subsequently, the list of actions is completed, and each step has been done while thinking only good thoughts and having superbly positive intentions. Inevitably, after a period of doubt, the question is asked: “Were you specific?” If you were looking for money to come into your bank account, were you specific about the amount? If you’re desiring a relationship, did you mention a detailed description of exactly the type of person you are looking for, i.e. hair color, belief system, shoe size?

Soon self-doubt, self-blaming, and shaming creep in and if one is not careful, a looping cycle of toxic positivity ensues. Begging the question: What outcome was sought, to begin with?

The easiest path isn’t always the straightest one.

But, exercise caution when looking for your next “go-to” resolution. No matter the outcome, be kind to yourself.

We are primarily targeting restaurants both in the United States and around the world for sponsor|curator designations. They are the perfect gathering places for the many artists with whom we connect. We are also seeking other creative venues and event spaces that we can link with and direct artists affiliated with ZO to. Additionally, we invite artists to take their own sponsor|curator page to update tour schedules, new album drops, exhibits, and other activities.

ZO has established several creative event spaces over the years and has recently launched a small one in California. We are developing this private residential location as an art gallery and unique creative space. It is available for events, outdoor classes such as Yoga and as a filming location. Check out: NoHo Creative Arts Space at this link. The intimate setting is already proving to be uniquely geared for the new trend towards safety, intimacy, and conversation. The photos above are from a recent gathering, and we will continue to update this page as we all come out of the shells that the worldwide pandemic has forced us all into.

Stellar Indemnification: Facing the Truth

By Tricia Stewart Shiu

Stellar Indemnification: Facing the Truth — Read by Tricia Stewart Shiu

In the early 1500s, a young painter and son of a peasant managed a feat known to few artists of that time. Qiu Ying (c. 1494–c. 1552) impressed and gained the support of several wealthy patrons. “With his special gift for copying paintings, Qiu Ying found favor among collectors, bringing him an opportunity to copy and learn from Song and Yuan dynasty paintings in the collections of the Jiangnan area and greatly broadening his artistic scope.”

He was adept at painting in various styles like ink-wash and blue and green style, but he excelled at gongbi brush technique, well known for its delicate and intricate brush strokes.

Qiu Ying’s paintings are housed everywhere from the Vatican to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). He is, most certainly, a world-renowned artist whose works are priceless.

So, it is no surprise that The National Endowment of the Arts, which manages the Arts and Artifacts Indemnity Program on behalf of the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities, chose to Indemnify the first exhibition, ever, held outside of Asia for the painter, Qiu Ying. Last year, LACMA hosted Where the Truth Lies: The Art of Qiu Ying.

ARTISTIC ALLEGORY | LE MOT JUSTE

Every year, since 1975, The Arts and Artifacts Indemnity Program has accepted applications both domestically and internationally, for artwork, artifacts or objects, rare documents, books, and other printed materials, photographs, films, and electronic materials. “Such objects must have educational, cultural, historical, or scientific value,” the programs says, “and the exhibition must be certified by the Secretary of State’s designee as being in the national interest.

Here’s where things get interesting, though. There are lots of holes in Qiu Ying’s biography and his works are challenging to authenticate. “There are estimated to be hundreds or thousands of copies and forgeries for every authentic Qiu Ying painting,” says William Poundstone on his blog Art and Chaos.

In fact, the curator of Where the Truth Lies, Stephen Little, weighs in by saying, “Few artists in Chinese history have proven as enigmatic as the great Ming dynasty painter Qiu Ying, honored as one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming dynasty. His is one of the most copied arts in Chinese history.”

Kealey Boyd writes in, “A Closer Look at China’s Most Enigmatic, and Most Copied, Artist,” “Despite this iconic status and passage of 500 years, unresolved questions around the artist persist. Only three paintings are dated by his hand, resulting in a flawed chronology of his production. Biographical information, such as the dates of his birth and death is unknown. It’s not unusual to lack this documentation among lower socioeconomic classes from the Ming period, but if he was of a lower class, this prompts more questions about how the artist ascended in the cultural hierarchy.”

“Where the Truth Lies grapples with such issues as artists who cross social boundaries, literacy, and the importance of connoisseurship in determining quality and authenticity. This will be the first exhibition on Qiu Ying ever organized outside of Asia.” Says the LACMA website. The exhibition will also include works by his predecessors and teachers, his daughter Qiu Zhu, and followers from the early 16th through the mid-20th century.

The exhibit is curated chronologically and Mr. Little chose to use the obvious challenges to create some healthy curiosity with visitors. “Two fan paintings hang at the entrance of Where The Truth Lies: The Art of Qiu Ying at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA),” said Kealey Boyd, who visited the exhibit in person, “The exhibition’s curator, Stephen Little, withholds the respective wall labels, taunting the viewer to claim the genuine Qiu Ying based only on observation.”

The irony is, of course, that although Qiu Ying’s training at copying paintings for wealthy patrons brought him global and historical notoriety, his own paintings were, eventually and prolifically, copied, as well.

The genuine article vs. a reasonable facsimile—to the naked eye, they could pass as truth. Only the discerning connoisseur can truly appreciate the breathtaking detail of each work of art.

March | CREATE THE FUTURE

Breaking Bland: Smooth Sailing in Open Waters

By Tricia Stewart Shiu

Breaking Bland: Smooth Sailing in Open Waters – Read by Tricia Stewart Shiu

“Tricia, may the learnings and experiences of the Vertex 2002 Wild Basin ‘Change Guides Camp,’ inspire you to new summits in your life’s journey.”

– Inscription from Mike Donahue on “The Longs Peak Experience and Trail Guide.”

ARTISTIC ALLEGORY | LE MOT JUSTE

Rules, regulations, and routines are meant to keep us safe, keep us all on the same page and bring a sense of order and/or unity to a community or group.

In fact, creating a routine is one of the fastest ways of staying centered in uncertain times. One of the easiest ways to combat uncertainty and chaos is to create a structured plan.

“Not knowing the future creates physical and emotional stress,” says Equitable article, “How Planning for Tomorrow Can Ease Uncertainty Today” “Making the right kind of plan can help you cope—and move forward.”

However, one problem that comes with a routine is that…well, it becomes routine.

There is an art to exploring, adventuring, and dreaming, using the open waters of imagination to break the bonds of banality.

What if, while you make your bed, every morning, you imagine you are shaking out the mainsail of your very own boat. Perhaps you are about to embark on an adventure to discover undersea treasure.

What if, as you plan your day and check off items on your “To-Do List,” you build in a theme, like a hilarious scavenger hunt with your favorite treats as prizes.

What if, you lived one day as a metaphor for something much larger than yourself?

Maybe rock climbing?

In his book, “The Longs Peak Experience and Trail Guide,” author and a fourth-generation Colorado mountaineer, Mike Donahue brings this metaphor to life. “It is every step along the way that makes a climb, and it is every moment along the way that makes a life. The secrets learned in reaching for mountain summits help us reach life’s summits…”

Mike’s expertise spanned his master-level understanding of mountaineering and summiting and his book—part trail guide, part life manual—shines a light on making life a true adventure. From planning and preparation to navigating the battle between your positive and negative inner voice, Mike’s offering is nothing less than an exemplar guide to being a truly, kind, compassionate, and, yes, adventurous human.

Sadly, Mike passed away in November 2005, but his life’s passion and legacy live on. His memorial page says the following:

“Mike acquired a near-religious passion for the mountains along with a mystical sense that many of the world’s troubles would be alleviated if only its people would wander and climb in his beloved mountains. Experiencing intimately the mountains, he thought, would bring about a kind of spiritual transformation and cultivate skills that are of great value in all areas of life.“

When it comes to dreams, Mike Donahue said it best:

“Everything, literally everything begins as a dream… And the more we try and make our dreams come true, the richer, more satisfying, and complete a life we live.

…don’t hold back. Dream on. And dream loud and strong. Every step you take toward fulfilling that dream will bring you richness and fulfillment that is very hard to find in life. So, go on… Dare to Dream!”

Sure, life needs structure and, especially now, it is important to stay safe and secure in every possible way. But, what if, the questions you ask yourself and the fun you have with each and every moment of your life, enhance and enrich your existence, as well as the lives of everyone around you?

What if?

Thanks, Mike.

Method to the Madness: Nature’s Anomalies

By Tricia Stewart Shiu

Method to the Madness: Nature’s Anomalies – Read by Tricia Stewart Shiu

It is a part of human nature to find logic and meaning in our lives. Patterns and even pigeon-holing are common to our thought processes.

Then, there are those experiences that defy logic. Like the events of the last year. Although we may have different beliefs and explanations about why and how the events unfolded and the outcomes that followed, there is one unifying truth: something irreversible has happened. There is no going back to anything resembling last year’s definition of normal.

We stand stunned, on the precipice of a new year, unsteady in anything we once believed or understood as true.

Now what?

ARTISTIC ALLEGORY | LE MOT JUSTE

What is next on this oddly familiar, yet strangely undefinable journey?…

…Some things remain the same. The sun rises every morning and sets every evening. Other than that, the landscape and the people upon whom the sun rises, are changing more and more with each passing day. The answers can be elusive and the questions, numerous.

Quantum physics answer some burning queries, but not all. Religion has, yet another frame to place upon uncertain times. Perhaps, more esoteric methods can be used like psychics or mediums. Everyone is searching for something solid, anything logical on which to base their next theory.

Therein, lies the interpretation of our own understanding.

Sometimes, our “go-to” oracles are spot on, but other times, not so much, and when all seems like it might be gobbled up by a barrage of questions like: “what’s next” or “what if,” the best course of action is to look at “what is.” By doing so, we can gain a much needed moment of rest to gather our equilibrium.

In other words, it might be appropriate to gain some distance, from our perspective. Treat it all as a grand experiment and look at our lives, in a broad, general sense.

In an experiment, getting a “baseline” measurement, upon which we can compare and contrast all other observations is important. Then, afterward noticing the unusual, the inconsistent, and the “stand out” effects or anomalies, can offer insight into a question or course of action (if there is any to be taken.)

A recent article in Bright Side called, 9 Anomalies Proving That Nature Can Beat Anyone — Just Look at Its Power says, “…nature has a lot of other tricks up its sleeve like lakes that disappear overnight, raining fish and other amazing things that are so scary and impressive, people often try to provide explanations for them that are far from correct.”

Some even believe our entire planet is one big anomaly, Trevor Nace, Senior Science Contributor at Forbes, backs this summation up with several worthy examples, one of which is that “Earth is the only planet known to sustain liquid water, which covers 71% of the world’s surface. Liquid water is essential to life as we know it and is believed to be the key prerequisite to finding life on other planets.”

Anomalies are not random. If they are viewed from a perspective of wonder and awe, these irregularities can create a sense of hope and encouragement.

Rudyard Kipling, the poet, summed up managing the madness of life by saying, “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you…” In short, our circumstances do not define us, however, our response to those events does.

The next time an earth-shattering news event floods your feed, remember the consistently inconsistent occurrence of nature’s anomalies. There could just be a method to the madness, even if it is not.

THIS EXPO IS ON HOLD
(if you chance upon this page)

What is Star Safe?

We all share the same sky and since the beginning of time, sailors and travelers have used the stars to guide them back to safety. Now, with our world falling upon dark times, we look back to the celestials and sometimes wish to be anywhere but here. Star Safe is a symbolic blessing for people to find security and peace in their life. We hope that as we look at the starry canvas above us all, we won’t feel so alone.

If there is a chance, Louisa Maria is going to take it! From joining a band that turned into a sour note to heading out on her own, every step is a lesson and in turn, every lesson can be turned into a beautifully done song. Songs that can be found on her July 2020 release, ‘Tea For Two.’

Right around the time we connected, Louisa Maria was gearing up for a livestream event to raise money for Southmead Bristol Hospital in relation to Covid-19. Joined by Elles Bailey, Badtouch, Collateral, Kyle Elliot, and Ritchie Ray – they managed to raise some major funds, and if you missed out on that – more live events are in the works. To find out more about what’s to come and to hear about the chances she’s taken up until now, continue on below1!

Kendra: When you decided to fly solo, did the conversation with the rest of Tequila Mockingbird feel like a breakup or was everyone mature and fine with your next step?

Louisa Maria: To be completely honest with you (and I feel like enough time has passed that I can now open up about it all) it was a bit of a disappointment from day one. Unfortunately, girl bands, in my opinion, are difficult because everything becomes so personal.

When I was asked to join the band I had the impression we would write together and have equal input into the bands’ music – naturally! My solo EP from 2015 had a track called “Tell Me”. The drummer in the band wanted to recruit me and release this song as a new single under their name. This happened but from then on all new material (apart from two other songs I brought to the project “Pretty Picture” and “Fire”) was written by the drummer Josie O’Toole and forced upon myself and the bassist to record for the bands’ second album without any input or discussion from either of us!

I was not happy with this arrangement but as I’d just arrived in Australia and was going to be there for six weeks to write as well as record; I had no choice but to comply. After we toured this album the vibe in the band went sour and I felt as if I was being pushed out. My track “Pretty Picture” had been B-listed on Planet Rock Radio after they listened to three other tracks that got sent to them. I received a phone call just before Christmas 2018 from the drummer saying they’d found another singer/guitarist. This band is now on its third new line up with only Josie O’Toole keeping it going. After I left it was three or four months until the bass player, Jacinta Jay, left or was “let go.” What more can I say?

Kendra: Other than being on your own more so now than with a band, you also switched gears when it came to genre as you went from rock to pop. Are there still rock elements or even a mentality that is still present in your new material?

Louisa Maria: Oh yes by all means – the new live set which has been developed a lot more over lockdown will have a punchy and rockier approach in performance aspects and live instrumental feel! I’ll never lose that rock-chic persona! I felt like a bit of a change was in order as I’d been controlled musically for so long by Tequila that I just had to break out of it. My entire creative side was just being trodden on and I had to change gear, as it were, in order to focus and bring back that creative spark.

Kendra: You took this chance and that’s what your latest single, “One Lump of Sugar” boils down to. It’s scary though to take that leap of faith, and it’s something many struggle their entire life to do. What’s some solid advice you have for those living in fear of taking a chance on something new?

Louisa Maria: My advice would be stay true to yourself! It must not be forced in any shape or form! I took the leap of faith and so far my latest songs have charted in the singer-songwriter charts. Also, my last single, “BANG BANG DROP,” made “Track of the Week”` on BBC UPLOAD Bristol. When you notice others coming on board with something – you know you are on the right track!

Kendra: If you had to compare your overall aesthetic and sound of ‘Tea for Two,’ to a tea flavor which would it be and why?

Louisa Maria: It would be Magic Dragon. It is a fruit-infused tea packed with really good stuff including dragon fruit together with the magical flavours of rosehip and blackberry leaves. The reason being it’s full of a juicy pop seductive vibe with a Latin sensual mix!

Kendra: This year has been a wild one for everyone, but how do you feel 2020 has shaped your creativity and drive moving forward?

Louisa Maria: My life changed a lot! I felt as if I were slipping away before lockdown with my personal life and work. I swore to myself I’d never be a normal person in the sense of having a 9-5 job, getting married, and having kids and settling down. No, no, no. I’m making the most of the time to write and develop and plan for the next five years! I’m planning on moving to NYC for six months next year in July 2021. 2020 has certainly put me more in touch with what I want rather than what others around me want. I decided it’s now or never and time to pursue even more.

Kendra: Usually, this is where I ask people what they have planned in the coming months but with the world in a strange place right now, plans aren’t as concrete as they typically are. So can you can go ahead and let us know what you have tentatively planned?

Louisa Maria: I’m trying to see this entire circumstance the world is facing as another opportunity to do something “new!” I’m still working on what that is however, live streaming events and the online world has taken off during this time! There must be more for musicians to do at present – it just hasn’t been thought of yet! Supporting the NHS and local charities is something I’ve been doing to help get positive messages out there.
